Sox Rebound In Baltimore. . .

(Schilling was Strong.)(Alex Cora hit a Home Run!)(Julio Lugo With a Slick Play.)(Ortiz Scores In The Ninth.)
After a disappointing two game set against the Blue Jays, the Red Sox rebounded on Wenesday Night against Baltimore, winning at Camden Yards 6-1. Curt Schilling was strong, producing this line:

7IP 5H 1ER 1HR 2BB 3K

Continuing his torrid streak, light hitting Utility Infielder Alex Cora (who has 32 CAREER Home Runs) hit a home run off of Daniel Cabrera. Raised his career numbers to 10-17 against the Orioles Starter. Mike Lowell kept up his run of good games with two RBI, and Manny Ramirez showed some signs of life adding two RBI of his own. Today the revitalized Sox look to continue their good fortune again in Baltimore with Josh Beckett facing off against Adam Loewen.

The Bloody Sock Not Bloody?

Thanks to this site.

Red Sox pitcher Curt Schilling's famous bloody sock from the 2004 playoffs is being called into question.

Gary Thorne, who does play-by-play for Orioles games, brought up the issue during the telecast of Wednesday night's game.

He said he had been told by Sox catcher Doug Mirabelli that the sock had been painted to look like blood in game 6 of the 2004 American League Championship Series against the Yankees.

The Boston Globe reported that Thorne claimed it was all a public relations stunt.

The statement ignited fury among members of the Sox.

Mirabelli denied ever telling Thorne it was paint saying, "I never said that. I know it was blood. Everybody knows it was blood."

Manager Terry Francona also weighed in, saying Thorne's remarks "Go so far past disappointing. Disrespectful to Schill, to his vocation. I'm stunned."

(This better be a misunderstanding on Thorne's part.).

Two Game Series With Toronto.

(Manny Whiffed in Monday's Game.)
(David Ortiz Strikes Out in On Tuesday)
(Wily Mo Pena Commits An Error on Tuesday) (Julian Tavarez Wasn't Very Good On Tuesday)

Well I wanted to post the highlights of the two game series the Sox had with Toronto on Monday & Tuesday. The problem is, frankly, there weren't any. Coming off their big three game weekend sweep of the Yankees, the Red Sox stunk up the joint losing on Monday 7-3 and 10-3 on Tuesday. And the games were phenomenally uninspired. I really have very little to comment on them. They start another quick two game series at Baltimore on Wednesday, with Curt Schilling facing off against Daniel Cabrera. Meh.

Tatuaje Havana VI Hermosos

CORONA GORDA, 5 5/8" X 46, Corojo 99

Well, I have already reviewed the torpedo vitola in this line, so I wont go into too much depth here. I just wanted to comment on the corona gorda version I had last night. If you read the review you know I think very highly of this line. Well the Hermosos are AMAZING! All the flavor of the torpedo, amped up a notch or two. Don't be put off by the less than giant size either, I had a long languid smoking experience with mine, lasting over an hour. To some up, burned fabulous, smells and flavors are great, good experience all around. Try some out!

Maker's Mark

Name (full): Maker's Mark (S*IV) Kentucky Straight Bourbon Whisky Handmade

Proof: 90

Price: $19.90 per 750 mL @ Marion County State Store, Marion OH.

Bottle: Distinctive. About anyone who knows whiskey could pick out a Maker's Mark bottle across the room. With its hand dipped red wax seal and hand printed parchment-esque label it strikes one as old style in nature. Right below the neck is another rendition of the Samuels Maker's Mark seal. The label claims that it is "America's only handmade bourbon whiskey - never mass produced.". It goes on to discuss the effort they put into each 19 barrel batch. The Whisky was "Distilled, aged, and bottled by the Maker's Mark Distillery, Inc. Star Hill Farm, Loretto, KY, USA.".

Color: Amber

Nose: hot cinnamon, minty(??)/green, lemony/orange, molasses, vanilla, nutmeg

When Diluted: sweeter, raw sugar, more cinnamon.

Taste: butterscotch, green, citrusy (oranges from the nose), sweet spices, barrel.

When Diluted: mint, barrel, orange

Finish: VERY very short, warm. Sudden, Jarring, over too fast.

Mouth feel: tingly around the edges, thin, but still mouth filling (medium in the mouth).

Conclusions: First off I have to say that I still like this bourbon quite a bit, although I find the finish to be quite the letdown. That said a friend of mine was right, this is the "Bud-Light" of bourbons. HE LOVED it!! He said she forgot he was drinking bourbon on several occasions while tasting this. He kept remarking that it didn't much taste like bourbon, so I asked him what it did taste like. . . . . . . . .and he said. . . . . well not much, really. The label/website go on & on about how much effort they put into each small 19 barrel batch (rotation, barrel selection, barreling at a low proof, etc.) and I really have to wonder why they do it. Is it really worth all the effort (& more importantly, maybe ADDED COST), because it doesn't seem to produce much result. At least all the extra effort at WT (the other distillery who puts the effort in regards to Low Distillation proof & Barrel Rotation) produced a very flavorful whiskey. Effort wise maybe this is a true small batch bourbon, and I know they helped bring about the small batch plethora we have today, but taste wise this is a middle shelf bourbon masquerading as a top shelf job. If you sold it to me for $12 I might make it an "everyday pour" but its just not worth the money to have it around all the time @ $20. They really should bottle different expressions of this bourbon, because I am sure they could do better than this, I would be interested to try a more aged, higher proofed (8 year, 101 proof, maybe??) version because I have a hard time believing all that effort has to go to waste.

Partagas Spanish Rosado San Augustin

(Got this stick as part of a spiffy Partagas three pack sampler!)
5½" X 52, Spanish Rosado

Appearance: Pretty Well Constructed. Smooth, no noticeable veins. A nice reddish brown color, and firm. Actually, solid as a rock! Boy, this dude is packed tight! Hopefully this doesn't cause burn and draw problems.

Pre-Light: Clip was easy and straight. Pre-Light draw was a bit restricted but not too horrible. Flavors consisted of a lovely tangyness, with some earthy undertones. Also leather and tobacco notes.

Burn/Draw: The draw did wind up being a tad more restrictive than I would have liked, but it really was not much of an issue. It produced a fair amount of smoke. The tight draw actually forced me to smoke the cigar more slowly than I would have otherwise, which lead to cooler smoke and a more languid smoking experience. The burn was spot on all the way through, razor straight and never budging. Hallmarks of a well made cigar.

Flavors: Yummy Stuff Here. A nice medium strength smoke. The flavors from the pre-light carry over here and there are a couple of great additions, after an initial burst of spice, it settles in nicely into some sweet tangyness, and a bunch of other nice flavors (Honey, Ginger, Cinnamon). About a third of the way in some of the sweetness abates, and the earthiness comes back, grounding the flavor and keeping it from becoming cloying. Those leather and Tobacco notes return, and Toasted woodiness. That spice comes back near the end building to a rather dry, almost peppery finish. this is my favorite domestic Partagas line so far (I still really want to try the Ciefuentes line), and it is a very good smoke. I can heartily suggest them to most anyone.

Back, to Back, to Back, TO BACK!! SWEEP!!

(Red Sox Got The Sweep!)(Dice-K Showed Signs of Brilliance.)(Dealing to AJOB!)(Poor AJOB struck Out!)(Manny's Home Run Left A Vapor Trail. . .)(JD Drew's Home Run was Second!)(Mike Lowell's Was Third.)(Jason Varitek was the fourth home run in a row!)(Chase Wright was toast.)(Lugo Doubles Off Mientkiewicz.)(Dustin Pedroia was slick with the glove.)(Mike Lowell's Three Run Shot Sealed It.)(Papelbon is a stud, AJOB is a chump.)

Backed by some historic power, the Red Sox completed the first sweep of the Yankees at Fenway Park in a long while on Sunday Night, holding on to wint 7-6. In the third inning, down 3-0 with two outs and nobody on, Manny Ramirez, J.D. Drew, Mike Lowell, & Jason Varitek each hit consecutive tape measure home runs off of Rookie Yankee starter Chase Wright, to put the team ahead 4-3. It was only the fifth time in Major League History that a team has hit four consecutive home runs. Also it was only the second time that four consecutive home runs have been hit off of the same pitcher. The other time was by the Clevleand Indians against the L.A. Angels in 1963 off of Paul Foytak:

(Joined by Chase Wright in Infamy.)

The Sox then held on, helped by Lowell's second HR, a three run shot in the 7th, to win and sweep the series. Starter Daisuke Matsuzaka looked good st times, but frankly, was left in too long.

The Sox host the Toronto Blue Jays this week, reprising a matchup from last week, pitting Tomo Ohka against Tim Wakefield at 7:00pm.
